I just had the most humiliating night. Last night I was on my way home from work and I was on one of the major tollways when suddenly I blew a tire. So I had to pull over to the side of the road with cars whizzing past me at 75-80 mph and check the tire. It's definately flat.
As I'm calling Kevin to ask him what to do, a guy riding a motorcycle pulls up and asks if he can help. I freaked out for a second until I realized it was a cop. He asked if I had a spare. So I showed him where it was. Guess what...the spare was flat. Great. Now what am I supposed to do.
So while I'm calling my insurance company to get it towed somewhere, he's calling a local cop that has a car so it will be safer because it's dark outside and I'm on a very busy tollway. In the meantime I'm sitting outside my car next to a cop on the side of the road. Bet that looked really cool.
The lady on the phone was obviously not local. I told her I was on the Eastbound 45 tollway on the ramp to northbound 130 tollway. She says after about 5 minutes of being on hold, "I can see an interstate highway 45 but there is no 130. 45 runs straight through Houston." Honey, I'm not in Houston. I already told you I'm in Austin. It's a tollway, not a highway. So finally after explaining this about 3 times the cop gets on the phone and tells her the same thing. This time she gets it.
Luckily there is one place in Austin that is still open. Unfortunately it is only open until 9 pm. It's now 8 pm. The tow truck is going to take 30 min. to get there. By this time the car cop had gotten there. So now I'm standing outside my car with a motorcycle cop and a car cop. Now I feel like a felon. The first thing the guys asks is," How come you don't have a spare?" I do....it's flat. thanks for asking. Then while the motorcycle cop is telling the car cop what happened another car cop must have seen the commotion and decided to stop to see what was going on.
Now I feel like I'm on America's Most Wanted. Really? You need 3 cops to protect one girl with a flat tire? So I get in my car to wait for the tow truck and the other two cops leave so it's just me and the one car cop.
The tow truck gets there and now I realize that I have to sit in a truck with a complete stranger at 8:20 at night. Fun for me. Luckily he decided to get the conversation rolling, "So, you didn't have a spare tire to put on?" I sold it on the black market for an iPod. Thanks for asking. AT least he was a retired fire fighter so he was really nice and he took the tolls so we got to the tire place at 8:40.
Guess what the first thing they asked was. "Why don't you have a spare?" My dog ate it. Just fix the stupid tire! After he looks at the tire he tells me, "your other tires look just as bad. You need 3 new ones or you're going to have another blowout just like this one." Great. How much is that going to cost me. He showed me the other tires and he was right.
1 1/2 hours, 3 tires, and $250 dollars later I finally get home. It's now 10:00 at night and i have to be up at 5:20 to get ready for work in the morning. When i get home I find my son, who has been having stomach pains for the last week, is laying on the floor crying because his stomach hurts again. I spent the next half hour getting him settled down and back in bed. I was too tired to eat at this point so i just went to sleep.
Fun times.
